Fort Lewis Mesa Student Council hosts Pennies for Patients

The Student Council at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School helped organized and will host the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program April 7-25. Needham Mini-Unit fair April 16

Needham Elementary School will host its annual Mini-Unit Fair from 1:30 to 2:40 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, in Needham’s gym and multi-purpose room. Students who will participate in the Mini Unit Fair have worked at home since January on a topic of interest and creating projects that involve higher-order thinking skills. Every two weeks, they turned in assignments related to their topic. The Mini-Unit Fair is a celebration of their hard work. For more information, contact Nicki Massieon at 247-4791.

 

Riverview music performance April 17

Riverview volunteer appreciation luncheon April 18

Teachers and staff at Riverview Elementary School will host a luncheon to honor all Riverview volunteers at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at Riverview. All volunteers are invited and encouraged to attend. Volunteers may reserve their spot by calling Sharon Matheson at 247-3862.

 

Riverview hosts family science night April 21

Riverview Elementary School will host a family science night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21, in the Riverview gym. Fifth-grade students will demonstrate science experiments, and hands-on activities and door prizes will be available for all attendees. Pizza, salad and drinks will be available for $5. Needham class photos April 22

Needham Elementary School will have class photos taken by Yanowich Photography on Tuesday, April 22. Students who wish to purchase a group picture must bring their payment on school picture day. Individual photos also will be available. For more information, contact Tana Sparks at 247-4791.

 

Miller snack and chat April 22

Miller Middle School will host a “snack and chat” from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at Miller. Representatives from the Boys and Girls Club will present information about the organization. All parents are encouraged and welcome to attend. Four DHS students participate in the 2008 Native American Journalism Career Conference

Four Durango High School students will participate in the 2008 Native American Journalism Career Conference April 21-24 in South Dakota. The students are Janice Canuto, Piper Hamlin, Caleb Rael, and Everett Rice. The conference will introduce and promote journalism as a career path for Native youth since Native Americans are the most underrepresented group in America’s newsrooms. Kindergarten and preschool registration

Durango School District 9-R will hold kindergarten and preschool registration days at each of the elementary schools from 8 a.m. 4 p.m. on the following dates. Parents should bring their students’ birth certificate, immunization information and proof of current address (utility bill). Students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2008. Students entering preschool must apply for enrollment.

·        Riverview Elementary School: Monday, April 21. Riverview will host a kindergarten orientation/open house for all 2008-09 kindergarten students on Monday, April 21. Parents may reserve a spot for their kindergarten student either at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. by calling the Riverview office at 247-3862. DHS ACT test schedule April 23

All Durango High School 11th-graders will take the ACT test from 8:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23. Ninth-, 10th-, and 12th-graders will not have morning classes. Afternoon classes for all students will begin at 12:45 p.m. For more information, contact DHS at 259-1630, ext. 2300.

 

Board cancels community coffee April 29

DHS senior award night May 5

The 2008 Durango High School Senior Awards Night will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 5, in the DHS auditorium. DFEE receives grant from Ballantine Family Fund

The Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence (DFEE) received a grant from the Ballantine Family Fund that will support the DFEE-funded Social Emotional Learning program for Durango School District 9-R elementary students. Social Emotional Learning is a curriculum that encourages respectful interactions, truthfulness, and other character traits that lead to a more positive school environment and as a result, an increase in academic achievement. The following students at Riverview Elementary School were selected to participate in Student Council for last trimester: Tiara Shelton, Baylen Patcheck, Katie Sullivan, Landree McMannis, Ilima Umbhau, Franklin Wickstrom, Alora Lind, Ben Wilbur, Mallory Byrd, Eric Setka, and Sabine Lindler.
