FREE YARD WASTE PROGRAM
AND RECYCLING AT BAYFIELD CONVENIENCE CENTER

Durango, CO - In 1996, La Plata County established a drop-off site at the Bayfield Convenience Center located on C.R. 223 for collection of yard waste.  On Thursday, May 1, 2008, La Plata County will resume its seasonal yard waste program through Saturday, November 29, 2008.  The program provides local residents a free option for the disposal of their dry, brown yard waste.  Periodically, the accumulated yard waste is mulched and made available to County residents free of charge.  Generally, the type of mulch available consists of the decomposing variety used in gardening and aeration of clay-type soil applications.  However, fresh wood mulch would be available during the particular year that grinding of the yard waste stockpile occurs.  Grinding is being scheduled for 2008.  Yard waste drop-off and wood mulch pick-up at the Bayfield Convenience Center can be made during its regular hours of operation as listed below.

Only dry, brown yard wastes such as tree trimmings, slash and tree trunks up to 8 inches in diameter will be accepted and pine needles are discouraged.   Yard waste will not be accepted during extended periods of inclement weather conditions.  Grass clippings and other “green” wastes unfortunately cannot be accepted due to Colorado Department of Health restrictions for yard waste collection facilities, but such green wastes can be disposed at the Bayfield Convenience Center for the customary fee of $9.00 per cubic yard.

A recycling drop off station is also available at the Bayfield Convenience Center, where citizens can recycle their green, brown and clear glass, newspaper, aluminum, and tin cans free of charge.  Please prepare your recyclables as follows: Glass should be separated by color and lids should be removed; and tin cans should be flattened at the open end to avoid aluminum cans lodging inside it.

The Bayfield Convenience Center is open as follows:
