The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education released a statement today that Dr. Shalee Cunningham has withdrawn her name as a candidate for the position of superintendent for District 9-R.

“The Board of Education has received a letter from Dr. Shalee Cunningham requesting that her name be withdrawn as a candidate for the position of superintendent in Durango School District 9-R,” said Floyd Patterson on behalf of the board.

In such an event, the board had previously decided that the search would be reopened and a new group of candidates would be considered. Hazard Young & Attea will conduct the reopened search per its contract with the district and has been instructed to begin immediately, according to the statement released by the school board.

Cunningham was offered the position of superintendent by the board on Jan. 28 contingent upon a site visit and negotiation of a mutually agreed-upon contract. The site visit was concluded on Thursday, Feb. 21, and the board discussed the results of the site visit during an executive session on Monday, Feb. 25. Mary Barter, who has served as District 9-R superintendent since 1999, will retire on June 30.
