DURANGO, Colo. – Maestro Guillermo Figueroa and Choral Director Linda Mack come together to present Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem as the centerpiece of Music in the Mountains’ three-week Festival, July 27 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Rocky Mountain PBS will record the concert for DVD and broadcast, including broad exposure on the Plum Network serving communities such as Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, the Hamptons, Vail, Aspen, Sun Valley and Miami Beach. The production is made possible by a donation from the Glacier Club, plus additional underwriting from Chevron Corporation. First National Bank of Durango is the concert Presenter.

Creating what Figueroa calls his “dream team,” members of the Durango and Telluride choral societies will join the Festival orchestra and four soloists, soprano Yali-Marie Williams, mezzo soprano Gabriela Garcia, tenor Rafael Davila and bass Ricardo Lugo. Figueroa has worked individually with the four soloists, but never collectively.

“Although Verdi follows the traditional form for a mass, he has composed a work of such emotional intensity that audiences cannot fail to be moved by its reverence and power,” said Figueroa, who recently conducted the work with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Music in the Mountains began in 1987 with 11 musicians, and today has grown to a three-week festival featuring more than 350 musicians from around the world. Offering  orchestral, chamber, conservatory and Pops concerts at multiple venues, Music in the Mountains runs through Aug. 3.

Information and tickets are available at musicinthemountains.com or the Festival office 970.385.6820.
