DURANGO, Colo. - Original Durango-based band Formula 151 is set to hit the road for Denver on Dec. 5 and take the next step toward winning a $1 million recording contract. Fans are invited to come along on the band's bus to cheer them on to victory.

Formula 151, featuring Dave Mensch (singer/songwriter and guitarist), Katherine Jetter Tischhauser (electric cello), Mike Kornelson (bass), and Steve Dejka (drums/percussion), placed first during the first round of Denver auditions for the Bodog Music Battle of the Bands, held Oct. 27 at The Marquis Theater. The win was based on fan voting on-line and in-person at the show, including influence by record executives.

“We’re ready,” said Mensch, who penned the four songs Formula 151 will perform during the competition. “The caliber of the bands we will be competing with this time will be higher, but that’s great because it inspires us to perform even better. And the cheers of the fans are even more important. We’ve got space for about a dozen more fans to come with us on the bus.”

Formula 151 contracted a luxury coach and arranged for overnight stays in Denver and show tickets for those fans interested in attending. Cost is $40 per person. The bus will depart Durango for Denver on Dec. 5 at 6 a.m., and depart Denver the next day at 8 a.m. to return to Durango.

“We were able to keep the cost down for the fans because of generous local sponsors,” added Mensch. “We truly appreciate our sponsors’ support.”

Brightwood Builders, Never Now Records, Desert Sun Coffee, Brown’s Sport Shoe, Speedy Needle, McCormick Tile and Stone, Katzin Music, Southridge Construction, Appaloosa Trading Co. and Coca-Cola stepped up to support the band’s effort in the Bodog competition.

Bodog Music is an international, independent record label featuring a diverse and growing roster of talented musicians. Focusing on unique marketing opportunities, Bodog Music is behind the Bodog Music Battle of the Bands – the search for the best unsigned bands in the country. Grand prize includes $1 million recording and marketing contract with Bodog Music, live shows in multiple major cities across the globe and a reality TV show.

For the up-coming competition, which, according to Mensch, is all about “rock,” Formula 151 intends to perform the original songs, “Bittersweet,” “Your Picture,” “What I’d Do To You” and “Tap Water.”

Formula 151 was launched by Mensch in 2004, and is known for offering a sound unique among today’s contemporary bands. Heavily influenced by the long heritage of singer/songwriters, as well as the cutting-edge rock bands, Formula 151 takes its listeners on a melodic and lyrical journey while incorporating dynamic musical arrangements. The band has recorded two CDs, Down on the Beaten Road and Yesterday’s Tomorrow.

Locally Formula 151 was a winner in the first Spotlight to Stardom talent search and will serve as the “House Band” for the 2008 Spotlight on May 17. Formula 151 songs were also selected for inclusion on Rhythms of Durango, Vol. 1 and 2 compilation CDs featuring artists who perform in and around Historic Downtown Durango.

During last year’s Bodog Music Battle of the Bands, more than 7,000 bands registered and performed at 350 battle showcases throughout the U.S. The field was then narrowed down to 10 lucky semi-finalists that competed in the Bodog Music Battle of the Bands reality TV series. Over four weeks, the 10 bands traveled across the U.S., performing showcases for local fans and completing a series of hardcore challenges designed to test their abilities as a rock band. Eliminating one band each episode, the show featured live performances from the competing artists and criticisms as well as praises brought to them by the panel of expert judges.
