DURANGO, Colo. - The Fort Lewis College Alumni Association will hold an Old Fort reunion at 9 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 4 in Room 190 of Whalen Gymnasium. Breakfast will be provided, complements of the FLC Alumni Association. The hearty, home-style buffet includes scrambled eggs, bacon, home-fried potatoes, French toast, muffins, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and orange juice. Admission is free, but reservations are required by noon on Fri., Sept. 26. To make reservations, call 970.247.7608 or email alumni@fortlewis.edu. As part of the festivities, FLC Director of Community Services Ken Francis will be honored for his role in historic preservation efforts at the Old Fort campus. Francis secured numerous grants for this project from state and regional historic groups. The Old Fort has a 128-year history, having served as a military base, Indian boarding school, agricultural high school and junior college. Preservation work and repairs to the Old Fort library are expected to be completed this fall. For his efforts, Francis will receive the Bob Lundquist Award for Faculty/Staff Service to FLC Alumni at the Alumni Awards Banquet during Homecoming Weekend, Sat., Oct. 18. Old Fort scholarship recipients will also be introduced at the reunion. Each year, the Alumni Association awards scholarships to qualified descendants of Old Fort alumni. “By endowing the Old Fort Scholarship years ago, Old Fort alumni set an example for future classes to follow,” said Director of Alumni Relations Chris Aaland. “Six students are able to pursue their Fort Lewis College liberal arts education this year thanks to the generosity and vision of Old Fort alumni.” Following breakfast, Old Fort alumni will be recognized during halftime of the Fort Lewis vs. Western State football game, scheduled for noon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. Old Fort alumni are also invited to attend the Skyhawk Booster Club’s tailgate party adjacent to Whalen Gymnasium. Admission to all of these festivities is free to Old Fort alumni and their guests. Fort Lewis College has nearly 400 alumni who attended the old Fort Lewis A&M Junior College campus south of Hesperus from 1956 and earlier. More than 10 percent of Old Fort alumni returned to campus in August 2006 for the last official reunion. At that event, Old Fort alumni received medallions commemorating the 50th anniversary of FLC’s move from the old campus to the present one.
