DURANGO, Colo. – Joel Mann has joined the Pagosa Springs office of La Plata Electric Association as a new Meter Reader/Collector, filling the position vacated by Pete Tackett, who recently retired.

“For most of our customers, LPEA Meter Reader employees are the most visible,” said Dan Hammond, LPEA CFO. “They must have good people skills as well as excellent canine skills. Dog treats are a must. Our meter readers are hard working and exemplary at handling the mentally and physically demanding job. If inclement weather is a problem, I’d suggest not becoming a meter reader.”
Inclement weather is likely not a problem for Mann as he readily admits to enjoying snow and the changing seasons in Southwest Colorado, saying, “I grew up in Arizona, in a hot place. Now it’s nice to have cool air.”
Originally from Tucson, Ariz., Mann and his family came to Durango in 1996, where he served as a line-locator for U.S. West, doing some 7,000 underground cable locations per year. He took a similar position in 2000 with WESODI (Western Energy Services of Durango, Inc.), a wholly-owned subsidiary of LPEA.
“So I know the area quite well,” said Mann who appreciated his extended family at WESODI, and welcomes the challenges of his new position at LPEA.
Married with three children, Mann and his family enjoy outdoor activities of all types, from summer camping to snow sports. He also hopes with the new position to have time to return to hunting, a sport he enjoyed in the past.
“I just love the area,” said Mann. “We’re planning on staying here. We want to raise our kids in a smaller community like Pagosa Springs.”
