Durango, CO – In mid-2007, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners initiated a strategic planning process for La Plata County called the “La Plata County Compass.” Community meetings were held to discuss the County’s role in Colorado local and regional government, and to provide input on issues of importance to the citizens of La Plata County.  The Board of County Commissioners and the County’s Leadership Team (department heads and elected officials) have synthesized community and staff input into a strategic plan that will serve as a guide to prioritize new programs and initiatives and evaluate existing ones.  The following core strategies were identified: economic vitality; sustainable development; transportation; healthy natural environment; organizational excellence; and thriving families and healthy community.

In April, the Board of County Commissioners held several public meetings to present the La Plata County Compass Strategic Plan to the citizens of La Plata County.  At those meetings, citizens were given the opportunity to review the strategic plan and suggest ways that County government can implement the core strategies.

For those who were unable to attend one of the public meetings, the presentation was recorded by Durango Community Access Television and is now available on the County’s website (http://co.laplata.co.us).  Citizens are encouraged to view the presentation and to give their comments to the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners at bocc@co.laplata.co.us.
