Formwalt was recognized for his commitment to education at NRECA’s Region VII meeting in Overland Park, Kansas, October 3, 2007, before an audience of more than 500 electric cooperative officials from Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Wyoming.

The NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director, or CCD, program requires attendance and demonstrated understanding of the basic competencies contained in five core courses:

  •      Director Duties and Liabilities
  •      Understanding the Electric Business
  •      Board Roles and Relationships
  •      Business Planning
  •      Understanding Financial Planning

The Board Leadership Certificate recognizes individuals who continue their professional development after becoming a Credentialed Cooperative Director.  Directors who have attained the Board Leadership certificate have completed 10 credits in advanced, issues-oriented courses.

“Today’s electric utility environment imposes new demands on electric cooperative directors, particularly increased knowledge of changes in the electric utility business, new governance skills and a working knowledge of the cooperative principles,” said Greg Munro, LPEA CEO. “Electric co-ops in Colorado have a commitment to work through the Colorado Rural Electric Association and its national organization to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit of their electric cooperative consumer-owners. We applaud Bob for his commitment.”

A Fort Lewis College graduate, Formwalt is a self-employed rancher and former bank loan officer. He served 12 years as an Archuleta County Commissioner, as well as serving on the Archuleta County Planning Commission, Airport Board and Housing Authority. Additional service includes the Region 9 Workforce Development and Economic Development Boards, the Colorado Job Training Private Industry Council, the Colorado Mine Reclamation Board and Abandoned Mined Land Council, the San Juan Basin Health Board, the San Juan Basin RC & D Council and the Colorado State Soil Conservation Board.

Formwalt is the LPEA board's Western United representative and serves on the Administration and External Organizations and Issues Committee.

LPEA, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative established in 1939, has a commitment to work through the Colorado Rural Electric Association and NRECA to help its board members add to their knowledge and skills for the benefit of the co-op’s consumer-owners.
