Get Your ZUMBA On!

Here in Durango, practically everyone does “Two-A-Days.” A hike and a bike ride, jog the dog and an exercise class, run the trails and lift weights. It’s just what Duragoan’s do. In fact, some magazine somewhere did list Durango as one of the healthiest/most active places to live, right? If you are looking for something new to add to your two-a-day repertoire, read on.

The latest fitness craze combines music, strength training and cardiovascular exercise with great dance styles like Salsa and Merengue…it’s called ZUMBA! And it’s a fun and effective dance fitness program. Zumba was invented in the early 90’s by Alberto “Beto” Perez; however, the classes have just recently gained momentum. Over 7.5 million people have participated in Zumba classes across the world. Have you got your Zumba on yet?

If not, you’ve got to try it! Specific beats and tempo changes transition the dance fitness workout from one toning, strengthening, or cardiovascular move to another all the while targeting every major muscle group in the body. Best of all… it’s so much fun you don’t even realize you are “working out,”  that’s not to say you won’t work up a sweat!

If you’ve got two left feet… don’t worry about it. You don’t have to know how to dance to have fun. Instructors guide you through a variety of dance styles including Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Flamenco, Chachacha, Reggaeton, Samba, Belly Dancing, Bhangra, Hip Hop, and Tango, so after a few classes you can say that you do, actually know how to dance.

Durango fitness studios offer a lot of opportunities to experience Zumba. The easiest way for you to find a class is to get online at zumba.com and go to “Find A Class.” If you’d rather, check out places like Core Value Fitness Center, Durango Rec Center, The Smiley Building Dance Studio, The Body Factory or Durango Dance. You can get your Zumba on somewhere in Durango everyday of the week (with the exception of Sunday).  So go on, get out there on the dance floor and get your Zumba on!

There will be a fundraiser ‘ZumbathonSaturday, October 9, 2010, 11am – 12:30pm at the Durango Recreation Center.
