Highways:

The city of Durango is accessible by two federal highways - U.S. Highway 160 and U.S. Highway 550. U.S. Highway 160, the Navajo Trail Highway, traverses the area from east to west. It comes from Pueblo, Colorado and the junction with Interstate 25, running to the west through Cortez, Colorado and connecting with Interstate 40 to the southwest which leads to Flagstaff where major routes connect to Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. United States 550 connects to Durango with Farmington, New Mexico and Highway 44 going south to Albuquerque where Interstates 25 and 40 meet (approximately 230 miles). To the north, U.S. Highway 550 connects Durango with the Grand Junction area and Interstate 70.

In the heart of Durango, 2.5 miles of U.S. Highway 550 has experienced major reconstruction. This major investment in the local infrastructure will continue to meet the growing needs of the city. Asphalt surfacing has been replaced with concrete, and this means less maintenance and the accompanying disruptions to transportation and local business for many years to come.

NEW AIR HELICOPTERS: Durango, La Plata County, and the Four Corners area, are one of the few communities that can boast that they have available to them a helicopter. They have had a helicopter available to them since 1964, for over thirty years. The personnel of New Air Helicopters have been involved in the helicopter operations in the Durango area since their inception. New Air Helicopters has been an "On Demand Helicopter Charter Operator" for more then 10 years.

Trucking Lines:

Durango and the greater Four Corners area is served by numerous motor carriers and delivery services from all geographic areas of the United States. Durango is located away from the major metro areas in the southwest. However, due to the area's excellent air and trucking connections, distances to major markets create only minor problems for local businessmen. In fact, if your major markets are the southwest or west coast areas, transportation from Durango is closer and more convenient than from Denver. Winter weather in Durango is more amenable to transportation to those areas also.
