7th Annual Durango Coffee Festival

Whaddya know, Joe? Who knew that drinking coffee could help break the poverty cycle?

Did you know that more than three out of four of those on welfare, 85% of unwed mothers and 68% of those arrested are illiterate. About three in five of America’s prison inmates are illiterate. And, it is estimated that the cost of illiteracy to business and the taxpayer is $20 billion per year.

The Durango Adult Education Center has dedicated the last 24 years to breaking the poverty cycle and opening opportunities to local residents through a variety of services. Those services cost money. So….

At 8:00 a.m. on September 10, local coffee, tea, and food vendors, along with a band of local poets, entertainers, musicians, and artists will show up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to put on a morning of non-stop culinary delight and family activities. Here is a sampling of activities to motivate you to set the alarm:

*Girl Scout Cookie and Coffee Pairing at each coffee vendor
*Savory Pancake Breakfast by cookmanfood
*Poetry Slam: live poetry readings by local poets
*Pajama Party Bike Ride (with prizes!) for kids
*Live Music
*Face Painting, Sand Art, and other kids activities
*Raffle for a Beach Cruiser Bike

So, have a cuppa (or several), enjoy the cool morning, and partner with Durango Adult Education Center, Durango Early Learning Center, and other community groups to increase literacy – and decrease poverty – locally.

Coffee Festival will be held from 8:00 a.m.- Noon on 8th (between the railroad tracks and Main).
