Household Chemical Collection Set for October 3rd

Household Chemical Collection Set for October 3rd

Durango, CO –  La Plata County residents are encouraged to get rid of old household chemicals such as automotive fluids, cleaning products, leftover paint and other chemicals at the fifth annual Household Chemical Collection day on Saturday, October 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The collection of hazardous chemicals for recycling and disposal will be held at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Accepted items include: cleaning supplies, painting supplies, indoor home supplies, garden supplies, automotive fluids, home and car batteries, hobby supplies, propane tanks, fluorescent bulbs and pharmaceuticals. Donations will be accepted to help reduce the costs. The collection cannot accept waste from businesses, ammunition or other explosives, electronics or radioactive waste. For disposal of these items call 375-5004.

This popular event costs $90,000 and is sponsored jointly by the City of Durango and La Plata County, with support from the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority. Voluntary donations are encouraged as they help offset the costs.  Arrangements have been made to make the collection accessible for people with disabilities. For more information, please call City’s Department of Sustainable Services at 375-5004 or visit our website at www.DurangoRecycles.com.
The inaugural Household Chemical Collection event was held in 2005, and has proven to be a big success each year.  In an effort to speed things along, an “Express Lane” was created in the recent years and was very successful.  The express lane serves the community member with only a few items. Event staff will determine if participants can use the express lane. All participants are to enter the event through the fairgrounds main entrance.
