Household Hazardous Waste Collection a Success

The sixth annual Household Hazardous waste collection event, jointly hosted by La Plata County, Durango Fire and Rescue and the City of Durango, was once again successful in collecting large amounts of chemicals and paint for proper disposal. Clean Harbors Environmental Services of Denver was hired to accept and dispose of the collected materials. BP also contributed financially to make this event possible.

At the event, which was held October 1st and 2nd, nearly 20 tons of material was collected, including 15,400 pounds of oil-based paint, 13,500 pounds of latex paint. 3,100 pounds of pesticides, 250 pounds of batteries, 40 pounds of compact fluorescent light bulbs (which contain mercury), and 5 pounds of elemental mercury.

Since the inception of the hazardous waste collection in 2005, more than 3,200 people have dropped items off for safe disposal. During the past two years, 45 tons of material has been collected.
