FLY TYING
CORNER
ANIMAS
RIVER SPECIAL
Designed
and Tied By John Flick.
John is
co-owner of Duranglers
and probably one of the finest all-around trout anglers on
the planet. In fact, he won the individual honors at the Jackson
Hole OneFly contest in 1987. John can share his knowledge
from the cutthroat on the Dolores to the steelhead on the
Babine.
The Animas River Special gets its origin from a long time
favorite, the Platte River Special. I've fished the Platte
River Special for many years on various rivers with great
success. The yellow and brown combination is a great imitation
for small brown trout and baitfish. There have been many days
when excellent streamer patterns like Muddlers,Buggers, Sculpins,
etc., just would not move fish. Then I'd pull out 'Old Yeller'
(Platte River Special) and immediately begin to excite fish.
Many times they won't eat the fly; but because of the yellow/brown
combination, browns, rainbows, and cutthroat alike will sure
come out from their lie and take a hard look! Don't get me
wrong; the lookers are usually smaller fish; the 'Mongos'
will more times than not, inhale the fly.
The
main drawback to the Platte River Special, and the reason
I designed the Animas River Special, is the materials. The
traditional PRS is tied with saddle hackle for the wing.
The saddle is just not durable enough to last for many fish
and tends to lose its good looks after being in your box
for awhile. Using streamer hair, doll hair, or some kind
of synthetic, long-fibered material slows this problem.
Also, by substituting a muddler style head verses a hackle
head, the ARS is a streamer that not only is more durable,
but has a better silhouette.
One
note, as the Platte River Special is not effective just
on the North Platte River; the Animas River Special doesn't
work just on the Animas River. On any river with a good
brown trout or bait fish population, you can fish the ARS
with confidence and success.
